The San Matias San Carlos Protected Rainforest was established on March 20, 1987, through Law (R.S.) N 0101-87-AG/DGFF, it is located in the department of Pasco, province of Oxapampa, district of Huancabamba, Puerto Bermudez and Villa Rica. This area has a surface of 145 818 hectares.
The main purposes of the San Matias San Carlos Protected Rainforest are to preserve the lands, the forest, the agricultural lands as well as to promote the development of economic activities to benefit different natives communities such as Campas, Ashaninkas and Amueshas.
