Reserved Areas in Peru
Alto Cañete Cochas Pachacayo
The Alto Cañete y Cochas Pachacayo Reserve was established on January 4, 1999 through (D.S.) N 001-99-AG. It is located in the departments of Lima (Province of Yauyos) and Junin (Province of Jauja) with a surface of 176 000 hectares.
In the Alto cañete and Cochas Pachacayo Reserve we can find the lakes Paucarocha, Moyococha, Yatamo and Huascocha, we can also find the Queñual plant (Polylepis sp.). The main goals of this area are keeping the good quallity of the water of the river for the population to drink, protect the lakes in the area and preserve the wild flora and fauna of the area; and finally foromote the tourism which in the last 5 years has become one of the most important activities in the area.
We can also find the andean partridge (Nothoprocta pentlandii), la chinalinda (Phalco boenus megalopterus) and the lique lique (Vanellus resplendens). The main purpose of this Sanctuary is to protect the historical scenary of the battle of Junin and preserve the archaeological sites relevant to the Pumpush Culture.
