Lakes and Iced Peaks-Cordillera Huayhuash Trek

INTRODUCTION:

This full circuit of the Cordillera Huayhuash encompasses views of glistening vertical walls of ice, snow, and rock.
Because of the geography and the quality of ice and snow, climbers compare this range with the Himalayas.
We have spectacular and varied views of Jerupajá (6634m), Jirishanca(6094m), Jirishanca Chico (6121m), Siulá (6344m), Siulá Chico (6265m), Rondoy (5879m), Jurau (5674m), Trapecio (5644m), and Carnicero (5960m)

ITINERARY:

Day 01 : LIMA / HUARAZ

Our comfortable vehicle takes us via the Pan American Highway along the Pacific Ocean coast, across sand deserts and through coastal valleys to Pativilca. Here we take the Pativilca - Huaraz Highway and drive up into the Andes until we reach Conococha Lake (4,100 masl). Scenic mountains capes announce our arrival to the Callejón de Huaylas Valley between the Cordillera Negra (Black Mountain Range) and the Cordillera Blanca. We continue to Huaraz (3,100 masl), the "Capital of Mountaineering and International Friendship." We overnight at our hotel in Huaraz City.

Day 02: HUARAZ/ CONOCOCHA LAKE / HUALLANCA / CUARTEL HUAIN

We drive up across the Santa River Valley where we admire the magnificent Cordillera Blanca, perennially snowed peaks; in the way crossing the typical towns of Recuay, Ticapampa and Catac. We arrive at the Conococha lake where we observe migratory Andean birds like the flamingo or Parihuana which nest in the lake during their migration. From here we can observed the impressive Cordillera Huayhuash. We descend to miner Pachapaqui town, and after ascend to Yanashallash pas (4,680 masl), from here we descend to miner Hunazala and Huallanca towns, and continue to drive along the San Juan river until Cuartel Huain. We set our camp (4, 100 masl).

Day 03: CUARTEL HUAIN / KAKANAN PUNTA / MITUCOCHA LAKE

We leave Mitucocha camp toward Kakanan punta pass (4,700 masl) from where we have a beautiful view of iced peaks of Cordillera Central area. We continue hiking observing the Hirishanca (6,126 msnm), Ninashanca (5,446 msnm) y Yerupajá (6634 masl) iced peaks. We hike toward Mitucocha Lake where we camp (4250 masl).

Day 04: MITUCOCHA LAKE / CARHUA PASS / CARHUACOCHA LAKE

We hike along Janca gorge, and ascend to Carhua pass (4,650 masl) from here descend to Carhuacocha lake where we set our camp (4,138 masl) and observe Andean birds like the Ibis andino, huachwa (Andean goose) and other kind of birds. From our camp we appreciate some beautiful peak of Cordillera Huayhuash: Hirishanca Chico (5,446 msnm) Yerupaja, Yerupaja Chico (6,121 msnm) y Siula grande (6,344 msnm).

Day 05 : CARHUACOCHA LAKE / SIULA PASS / HUAYHUASH

We hike between 7 beatifull lakes, and admire Siula, Cangrajanca and Quesillo cocha lakes. We hike up to Siula pas (4,800 masl) enjoyin the view of Yerupaja, Siula grande, Carnicero (5,960 masl) and Trapecio (5,644 masl) iced peaks. Descend to Huayhuash ans set our camp at 4,350 masl.

Day 06: HUAYHUASH / PORTACHUELO HUAYHUASH PASS / VICONGA LAKE

Hiking toward Portachuelo de Huayhuash pass (4,750 masl) from here we observe Tapecio, Puscanturpa (5,430 masl) iced peak in the Cordillera Huayhuash, and Loen Huacanan (5,427 masl), Quesillo Janca (5,357 masl) along the Raura mountain range in the horizon. We descend to Viconga Lake, camping in the surroundings (4500 m). After lunch we enjoy a refreshing afternoon in the hot springs of Viconga.

Day 07: VICONGA LAKE / PASO PUYOC / HUANACPATAY

We hike up to Puyoc pass (5000 masl) from where we have an stunning view of the whole Cordilleras Huayhuash and Raura mountain range. We descend to Huanacpatay gorge where we set up our campsite (4,350 masl).

Day 08: HUANACPATAY / SAN ANTONIO PASS / CUTATAMBO

Today we climb to San Antonio Pass (5,000 masl) considered the most beautiful point of view of all our route; and from which we appreciate Jurau (5,599msnm), Cuyoc (5,549msnm), Siula, Yerupaja and Sarapo iced peaks and the beautiful Jurao and Sarapococha lakes with clear waters of turquoise color. Along the way we admire the sight of the unusual pygme lupinus trees. We camp in Cutatambo  (4,400 masl). After lunch we visit the Sarapococha Lake, and the camp site of Joe Simpson, whose spectacular adventure is told in the book and film “Touching the Void”

Day 09: CUTATAMBO / HUAYLLAPA

We descend along the Huayllapa River by the Calinca gorge. We set our camp in the vicinity of Huayllapa village (3,600 masl) where women wear colorful and beautiful traditional dresses. Afternoon is free for personal activities.

Day 10: HUAYHLLAPA / TAPUSH PASS / GASHPA PAMPA

We ascend the Tapush pass (4800 m) admiring the constantly changing faces of Juituhuarco (5,448 masl), Auxilio (5,560 masl) and Diablo Mudo (5220 m) iced peaks. We descend to our camp in Gashpa pampa (4,400 masl)

Day 11: GASHPA PAMPA / YAUCHA PASS / JAHUACOCHA LAKE

We ascend the Yaucha pass (4,800 masl) and admiring the Huacrish (5,622 masl), Tzacra (5,548 masl) Ratzak (6,017 masl), Siula Grande and Yerupajá.  We descend along the Huacrish gorge where we observed the impressive Jahuacocha Lake. We camp in Jahuacocha, (4,050 masl) where is concentrates a variety of Andean birds

Day 12: JAHUACOCHA LAKE / PAMPA LLAMAC PAS / LLAMAC / HUARAZ

Today we pass along some patches of forests of the endangered Quenual tree, one of the few species of trees that grow at this altitude. We arrive at Pampa de Llamac (4,300 masl) to enjoy the scenery formed by both cordilleras: Blanca and Huayhuash. Then we descend to Llamac village (3,300 masl), where our car will be waiting to transfer us to Chiquian (3,400 masl) and Huaraz, transfer to our hotel.

Day 13: HUARAZ / LIMA

After a relaxing breakfast we return to Lima, carrying with us unforgettable memories of our experiences in the world's largest tropical high-mountain ecosystems and the friendships we built with our adventurous companions on the trails of Cordillera Blanca and the Huascarán Biosphere Reserve.  We arrive in Lima in the afternoon.

• Hotels in Lima and Huaraz / Dinners in town / Personal expenses: camping gear, specific medicines equipment, phone calls, extra meals, drinks, tips and others of personal nature.
