Choquequirao is situated in the spurs of the mountain range of Salkantay, at 3035 m.a.s.l. surrounded by mounts Yanama, Ampay, Choquetacarpu and Pumasillo on the right side of Apurimac river.

Choquequirao is an Inca town formed by small sites spread out in rubblework that in its adjoining constructs a complex metropolis similar to those of the other regions placed on the crest of the hill by the some name of Choquequirao.

Itinerary:

Leaving Cusco, heading north on the main highway towards Abancay. We will leave the city behind, and cross into Antapampa with breathtaking views of mount Salcantay and Humantay at first. As we leave this high meadow area, the Pitusiray, Chicon and Verónica come into view.
 
Once we begin to descend into Limatambo, if there is time we will visit the Inca site of Tarawasi located in the outskirts. The road continues until reaching the Apurimac River, where we will cross its impressive gorge. Past the village of Curawasi, we will find the stone of Sayhuite and its carved map, believed to be that of the Inca Empire. Then we will arrive at the end of the car ride in a small place called Capuliyoc (2911 m.a.s.l/9550 feet) at this point our pack animals and horsemen will be waiting for you to take care of all equipment and your personal belongings.
 
We will start walking along the edge of the mountain Capuliyoc, where we will get our first view of the Apurimac canyon and the trail that lies ahead. A few hours later we will arrive in Chiquiska (1893 m.a.s.l/6210 feet) where we will enjoy our lunch. After this lunch we will hike down to the rushing waters of the Apurimac until we reach Playa Rosalina (1478 m.a.s.l/4849 feet) where we will spend the night and will have dinner as well.

  • Distance from Capuliyoc to Chiquisca 7.4 Km (4 Miles)
  • Distance from Capuliyoc to Playa Rosalina 10.8 Km (6 Miles)
Average walking Time: 6 hrs.
After breakfast, in Rosalina beach (1478 m.a.s.l/ 4849 feet) we will cross the suspension bridge; from here we will have an uphill walk lasting half the day which will brings us to Marampata (2911 m.a.s.l/9550 feet) – a small meadow where we will have lunch.
 
As we ascend on the steep trail, we will start to appreciate the canyon land vegetation and environment on both sides of the Apurimac canyon. The afternoon hike is not as steep as we approach the hanging valley where the site of Choquequirao is found.
 
We will camp near the site at an available flat part (2866 m.a.s.l/9402 feet)at the time we will be getting ready for the next day to explore the isolated Inca sites and the surrounding cloud forest.

This will be a beautiful day. We will be stricken by observe how the vast majority of visitors take 4 days trekking but only a few hours or even minutes to enjoy exploring the different sectors of Choquequirao (3066 m.a.s.l/10059 feet) Bearing in mind that Choquequirao is scattered on both sides of the spur of Apu Corihuayrachina, we will realize a fair amount of time is needed to understand the integrity of its context.
 
Travelers will enjoy lunch near the ruins in the Choquequirao campsite and hopefully view the condor flight over the deep canyon. After a full day visiting Choquequirao you will take your way down to the campsite of Santa Rosa Baja (2073 m.a.s.l/6801 feet) where we will have dinner and overnight.

Average walking Time after visit: 4 hrs.

After breakfast in the campsite of Santa Rosa Baja (2073 m.a.s.l/6801 feet), we will begin our day way descending over the Apurimac Valley. The descent is very steep and so we take our time, descending slowly. This path will show how steep this river valley is, as well as exposing some impressive and unforgettable views. Then we take our way up to Chiquiska (1893 m.a.s.l/6210 feet) where we will rest in and will have lunch.

After lunch, we will continue our way to Cocasama (2330 m.a.s.l/7644 feet) that is a small village full of typical houses of the Andean area. At this point we will enjoy the last dinner of this trekking and also we will spent the last night.

Average walking Time: 8 hrs.

After breakfast early in the morning in Cocasama (2330 m.a.s.l/7644 feet), we will start the last day of hiking; on our way back to Capuliyoc 2911 m.a.s.l/9550 feet) we have the chance to enjoy the lookout point and also a nice weather of this area. Here, we will finish the Choquequirao hiking, and we will board the bus to go back to Cusco.
