Pikillacta and Andahuaylillas

Half Day Excursion

It includes the visit to the complex of Pikillacta and the Colonial town of Andahuaylillas.- We begin our route by the ruins of Pikillacta to 30 Kms.

Pikillacta is situated at 30 kms. from Cusco and it’s considered one of themost important pre Inca sites in Cusco.

Andahuaylillas is a very cozy small town with a beatiful colonial church.

Itinerary:

Pikillacta complex is composed by more than 700 structures: 200 Kanchas (departments), 504 qolqas (storages) and different buildings that should have sheltered a population of about ten thousand people.

Very near the city, we find the Lucre lagoon or Huacarpay at about 3200 meters high (10500 feet). This was a shelter of wild fauna species such as wild ducks, geese and flamingos due to the suitable atmosphere produced thanks to totora canes and terraces to cultivate in the rocky faces of the mountains. They also fished trout and atherine.

It is a small town with not a severe climate as it is surrounded by mountains in the left bed of the Vilcanota river which is named as Urubamba in the lowest regions. Its lands are fertile and its people are quiet and friendly.

The most important attraction for the visitors is its church: San Pedro de Andahuaylillas considered ad the “Sistine Chapel” of America due to the quality of its art pieces.

Built at the beginning of VII century, the interior of the temple is decorated with murals performed by Luis Riaño ( XVII century) representing the path to glory and the path to hell. He was also said to be the author of the low borders of the wall and an important oil painting of the archangel San Miguel. Besides, this church holds a majestic piano, numerous canvases of the Academy of Cusco, silver work and baroque altars.
